Martin J. Bastiaans was born in Helmond, the Netherlands, on 18 January 1947. He received the 'ingenieur' degree (= M.Sc. degree) in Electrical Engineering (with honors) and the Ph.D. degree in Technical Sciences from the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (Eindhoven University of Technology), Eindhoven, Netherlands, in 1969 and 1983, respectively.
In 1969 he became 'wetenschappelijk medewerker' (= Assistant Professor) and since 1985 until his retirement in 2012 he has been 'universitair hoofddocent' (= Associate Professor) with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology, in the Signal Processing Systems Group, where he taught electrical circuit theory, signal theory, digital signal processing, and Fourier optics and holography. His research covers different aspects in the general field of signal and system theory, and includes a signal-theoretical approach of all kinds of problems that arise in Fourier optics, such as partial coherence, computer holography, optical signal and image processing, and optical computing. His main current research interest is in describing signals by means of a local frequency spectrum (for instance, the Wigner distribution function, the windowed Fourier transform, Gabor's signal expansion, etc.).
He served for more than ten years as a member of the Research Committee of the Department of Electrical Engineering in 1979/1983, 1993/1998, and 2005/2006, and for almost eight years as one of the three members of the Board of this Department in 1984/1986, 1991/1992, and 1998/2002. In these functions, and particularly in the function of board member, he was responsible for the departmental research. From the beginning of 2001 he served as the Department's coordinator for International Educational Activities and from September 2003 he was also the Department's Erasmus coordinator; these functions ended on 1 February 2011. From February 2005 until February 2011 he was a member of the Department's Board of Examiners.
He was the Counselor of the IEEE Student Branch Eindhoven from May 1996 till the beginning of 2007; on 27 February 2007 he became honorary member of this Student Branch "in recognition of his outstanding service and continuous contributions as counselor." In January 1999 he was appointed a member of the IEEE Region 8 Student Activities Committee, where he co-ordinated the Student Paper Contest till mid-2009, and in 2007 and 2008 he was a member of the IEEE Region 8 OpCom, where he held the position of Vice Chair Student Activities. In January 2004 he became a member of the IEEE Benelux Section ExCom, where he held the position of Vice Chair in 2005-2006 and the position of Chair in 2007-2008. In January 2009 he was appointed the Vice Chair of the IEEE MGA Student Activities Committee and he was the Chair of that Committee in 2010. Elected as the 2011-2012 IEEE Region 8 Director-Elect in 2010 and having served as IEEE Region 8 Director in 2013-2014, he served as the IEEE MGA Vice Chair, Geographic Unit Operations in 2015-2016. He currently serves as the IEEE Vice President-Elect, Member and Geographic Activities. A recipient of the 1999 Outstanding Student Branch Counselor Award, he is also the 2009 recipient of the IEEE MGA Larry K. Wilson Transnational Award "for significant contributions to the IEEE volunteer experience and member engagement throughout the world."
Martin Bastiaans is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America - "for pioneering contributions to the description of optical signals using local frequency spectrum concepts" - and a Fellow of the IEEE - "for contributions to signal processing for optical signals and systems." He has published over 180 papers in international scientific journals, books, and proceedings of scientific conferences.
